Description

Wait a second, isn’t it supposed to say “wine & tapas”? It may surprise you, but according to different sources, Spain ranks among the top 5 beer consumers in the world. And it’s not just that we like to drink—we have some seriously great beer! Now, let’s be clear: this is not another “let’s get drunk” night—you don’t need us for that. This is about having a fantastic time together, making new friends, and diving into incredible stories about Madrid’s 20th-century history. Why? Because not everyone knows that Spain endured nearly 40 years of dictatorship, a time when the word freedom had a very different meaning, and challenging the system could get you into serious trouble. But then… EVERYTHING CHANGED! In Madrid, the end of the dictatorship in 1975 and the cultural explosion that followed in the 1980s became known as “La Movida Madrileña.” And what was that? Some describe it as el destape, which translates to the Spanish cultural thaw—a period of artistic and social liberation. Join us on this walk through the most iconic neighborhoods of Madrid—Malasaña and Chueca—which were the incubators of a new era of freedom, with artistic expression, liberal movements in cinema, music, literature, and fashion, and a greater openness to previously taboo subjects, especially sexuality. During this 2.5-hour tour, we’ll uncover the significance of this transformative period through fascinating stories that take us from the beginning of Franco’s regime in 1939 to the vibrant present day. Along the way, we’ll stop at three different spots to enjoy a refreshing beer with some tapas to share, and chat about the experience.
