Description

Slavery in Spain can be traced to the Phoenician and Roman eras. In the 9th century, the Muslim Moorish rulers and local Jewish merchants traded in Spanish and Eastern European Christian slaves. Spain began to trade slaves in the 15th century, and this trade reached its peak in the 16th century. A journey through the slave history of Madrid: The trace of this 'business' can still be seen in numerous places in the Spanish capital, where enslaved people influenced the configuration of the city as we know it, past and present. Spain was the penultimate territory of the Atlantic World to abandon slavery definitively. This tour is the reaffirmation of the black presence in the Iberian Peninsula centuries before Christopher Columbus.
